Listening Back Ahead Up and Down
A night of performances and sound installations, and a retrospective installation of SONO.

Presents a performance using gyroscopic hat developed as an interface for live sound control. Head movements are processed as control data, allowing the performer to navigate and manipulate sounds in real time. The work constructs an ecosystem of physical gesture, spatialisation, digital processing and acoustic resonance, exploring how movement can perform both an instrument and the space it inhabits.

The phenomenon of the mackerel run hits the shores of Hastings at least once a year, where, in the warm weather small bait fish come to the shallows to feed drawing frenzied mackerel that herd them toward the shore. In this feeding frenzy the mackerel thrash around and leap out of the water breaking the surface causing the water to look as if it were boiling
This piece is an attempt to capture some of this spectacle whereby mackerel and whitebait are translated into pixels on an LED Matrix, along with their own sonic representations being generated in real time as they gather and move in shoals, it crescendos as the mackerel start to chase the whitebait, before it begins again. A snapshot of a vastly complex ecological system procedurally generated on a small microcontroller.
